When the question “What is addiction?” Is being thrown at you. This is what your mind should read;
Addiction is a psychological and physical inability to stop a particular habit or activity, due to the pleasure you derive from them, even though it is causing psychological and physical harm.
Simply put, Addiction significantly impairs the user’s ability to control or quit a particular behavior
Types of Addiction
Contrary to the general misconception, Addiction is not just limited to drug abuse. Addiction can be categorized under two headings. They are;
A. Behavioral addiction and;
B. Substance addiction
Substance addiction which most people is familiar with is a progressive, relapsing condition that is characterized by compulsive alcohol or drug use despite negative consequences.
Sometimes, we ignorantly become addicted to a particular drug. Not necessarily the hard drugs. Like that of cocaine, alcohol, marijuana and rest of them. We equally become addicted to things we neglected. Sometimes, substance like the inhalers, painkillers and so on can be addicting. But, we see it to be nothing. Mind you it also counts and its hazardous to health.
As for the other……
A behavioral addiction is similar to a substance addiction. In that a person essentially becomes dependent on the pleasurable feelings that certain behaviors brings about. Especially when one lose self control over such behavior, including continuation of the behavior despite negative consequences in work or social relationships. Some of these behavior includes;
• Cell phone and social media.
• Food and eating.
• Love and relationships.
• Pornography and masturbation.
• Video games. etc.
Which of these do you belong? Definitely, everyone is a victim of the first “cell phone and social media”. Apart from that, which one do you belong?
Which ever of the two addictions mentioned above, they have similar mechanisms of action in the brain. Both substance abuse and engaging in addictive behaviors targets the brain’s reward system and produces feelings of pleasure
